Coaching
Coaching is an accepted, cost-effective development process in which the coach facilitates the enchantment of work performance, life experiences, self-directed learning and personal growth. The development process supported the individual to achieve specific personal or professional result or goals. The individual receiving coaching is referred to as the coachee. Let’s look at a few definitions of coaching –
“Coaching is about developing a person’s skills and knowledge so that their job performance improves, hopefully leading to the achievement of organizational objectives. It targets high performance and improvement at work, although it may also have an impact on an individual’s private life. It usually lasts for a short period and focuses on specific skills and goals.” (CIPD 2009)
“Unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them” (Whitmore 2010)
“Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership, designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhances the quality of their lives” (International Coach Federation)
Co-active coaching is “a powerful alliance designed to forward and enhance a life-long process of human learning, effectiveness and fulfilment” Whitworth et al (2007)
Coaching
differs from mentoring, counselling, training or consulting. People often confuse mentoring and coaching. Though related, they are not the same. A mentor may coach, but a coach is not a mentor.
Mentorship
is a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced and knowledgeable person assists to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person on matters relevant to work, career or professional development. The relationship lasted for a specific period with mutual consent from the mentor and mentee.
Counselling
provides professional assistance and guidance to individuals to support them in dealing with personal or psychological challenges and how to come to terms with issues they are facing in their lives. A therapeutic intervention tends to focus on emotions, feelings, thoughts processes and experiences related to a past event and work towards psychological health.
Consulting
is providing expert advice and knowledge in exchange for a fee. A consultant is usually an expert or a professional in a specific field and has expert knowledge of the subject matter and is contracted to provide innovation solutions to address a particular business problem. Once this has been accomplished, the consultant leaves.
Is normally a short-term process to increase the knowledge and skills of a person to enhance job performance which relates to increased competence.
Conversational coaching
Coaching involves a dialogue to assist clients to shift their perspectives and thereby discover different solutions to achieve their goals and objectives. This would be achieved by establishing goals and an action plan in accordance of the SMART principle to achieve these coaching outcomes. During the dialogue I listen, observe, assess, ask questions, clarify and reflect on the process. I believe the client is naturally resourceful and needs support, acknowledgement and encouragement to move forward and achieve results.
The International Coaching Federation describe the benefits of using a Coach – “Professional coaching brings many wonderful benefits: fresh perspectives on personal challenges, enhanced decision-making skills, greater interpersonal effectiveness, and increased confidence. Those who undertake coaching also can expect appreciable improvement in productivity, satisfaction with life and work, and the attainment of relevant goals”
